A fun gateway

Let’s embrace our hill and make it fun by creating a story or series of experiences over it. Then at each roundabout you get another piece of the story connecting all our spaces together, drawing people further in to explore more. Our town centre is easy to find, it’s linked to Homedale Village and more of our many destinations beyond. Potential projects to achieve this are:

  • further develop Waiu Park
  • create iconic navigation at our roundabouts
  • Hill Road walking and cycling shared path becomes an interactive trail
  • Hill Road lookout with local stories
  • better direct traffic Wainuiomata Road to the town centre
  • create Homedale Village destination and enhance streetscape

A well connected neighbourhood

Let’s become a haven full of smart and healthy living choices that’s well known as great place to live - and encourage the retirement village development and new housing options. Let’s make it easy to get around - use river reserves as trails so we can walk or cycle easily between sportsgrounds and hilltop trails – plus being able to explore an art or heritage trails as we walk. Plus let’s see more plants in the streets for more of that green leafy feel all around.
Potential projects to achieve this are:

  • link all track entrances as one trail
  • create cycle / walkways on waterways
  • plant more vegetation in the streets
  • promote as a great place to live
  • develop future housing options
  • encourage the retirement village
  • upgrade our pool
  • art installations and heritage trails

A vibrant town centre

Let’s create a vibrant, safe and attractive town centre with mixed spaces for lots of people come at different times to do lots of different things - work, shop, play and to be entertained. A town centre as THE meeting place and everything’s easy to get to at integrated hubs - go to an event, meet friends for lunch while the kids are playing, take care of all our shopping in one easy place with quality options.
Potential projects to achieve this are:

  • encourage the mall redevelopment
  • activities for all ages
  • multi-use outdoor space for play, events and outdoor dining
  • redevelop The Strand and Queen Street to allow better pedestrian flow
  • a new community integrated hub
  • encourage a Sportsville group hub
  • encourage new mixed uses of spaces
  • quality new businesses

A top destination

Let’s make Wainuiomata a preferred New Zealand experience - well-known as a place to escape to and go on an adventure. Visitors come seeking one experience and we leave them inspired with many others while contributing to our town. We’ve further developed Waiu Park, filled a calendar full of unique events and are encouraging visitors to stay longer and spend more to create jobs.
Potential projects to achieve this are:

  • raise awareness of tourism experiences
  • package up our tourism assets and encourage visitors to stay longer & spend more
  • fill a calendar full of unique events attracting visitors

A proud Wainuiomata identity

A truly vibrant Wainuiomata is sustained through our local arts and culture. We have an immense pride so let’s tap our local talent so locals and visitors have a genuine understanding of our identity of the town. Something iconically Wainuiomata.
Potential projects are:

  • create trails of heritage stories, public art and/or sculpture
  • develop projects with local school talent
